This tree is recognized as the largest tree in North America outside of the Cascades. Over 18' in diameter and 16 stories tall!
The size of this tree isn't just what makes this giant Cedar so special - it's the fact that she is over 3000 YEARS OLD! A tree so old, when the Egyptians were building pyramid's - it was already 500 years young!
To be in the shadow of such greatness was an indescribable feeling, amplified even louder while surf skating in this one of a kind old growth forest!
Western redcedars greater than 5 ft in diameter are the oldest trees in the northern Rocky Mountains, with estimated ages of 1,000 to 2,000 years. They can attain diameters greater than 10 ft much larger than their largest conifer associates, western larch and western white pine. It is impossible to accurately determine the age of large western redcedars because heart-rot fungi render them hollow. Using a conservative method based on growth rates of individuals of various sizes, estimated the age of a western red cedar 8.9 feet in diameter at breast height to be 2,820 years.
