How to Change Oil on a VW Jetta 1.8TSI Engine
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare the vehicle: Warm the engine to a normal operating temperature to help the oil drain more easily.
Park on a flat, stable surface to ensure the ramps do not shift.
Place ramps directly in front of the front wheels.
Slowly drive up the ramps until the tires are centered on the ramps.
Put the vehicle in Park (or in first gear if it's a manual).
Engage the parking brake and block the rear wheels for added safety.
Open the hood, take off the decorative engine cover, and remove the oil filler cap to allow the oil to drain more quickly.
Position your drain pan under the oil drain plug.
Use the T45 socket to loosen and remove the oil drain plug, letting the old oil drain completely.
Use the 32mm socket to loosen the oil filter housing and remove it. Remove the old filter and the O-ring from the housing.
Clean the oil filter housing.
Lubricate the new O-ring with a small amount of clean engine oil and install it onto the housing.
Install the new oil filter into the housing.
Tighten the filter housing by hand until it is snug.
Use a torque wrench: Use a torque wrench to tighten the housing to the specified torque, typically 25.5 Nm.
Reinstall the drain plug, ensuring you use a new crush washer, and torque it to the recommended specification (around 22 ft-lbs).
Add new oil:
Using the funnel, add the recommended amount of new 5W-40 oil into the filler cap.
Start the engine and let it run for a minute to circulate the new oil.
Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
Check the oil level with the dipstick, adding more oil as needed.
The vehicle should be on a level surface.
Reinstall the engine cover, and check for leaks around the filter and drain plug.
To ensure an accurate reading, check your oil the next day after the engine has had plenty of time to completely drain into the oil sump overnight.
Reset the service light: Follow the specific procedure for your Jetta model to reset the oil change service reminder.
Record the date and mileage for your next oil change.
When you're ready to remove the car, remove the wheel chocks first, and ensure the wheels are straight before you slowly drive off the ramps.
I performed an oil and filter change because the engine oil was contaminated with gasoline. Three days later I replaced the oil filter again to ensure proper engine health and filtration.
Tools & Supplies
1. SAE 5W-40 full synthetic motor oil that meets the VW 502 00 oil standard (around 5.2-5.8 quarts).
2. New oil filter and O-ring
3. 32mm socket
4. T45 socket
5. Ratchet and extension
6. New drain plug with crush washer
7. Funnel
8. Shop rags or paper towels
9. Torque wrench
10. Car Ramps for Oil Changes or Floor jack and jack stands
