Went out for a few hours on the kayak yesterday accompanied Jake and Ryan.
I apologise for the sound quality in some of the videos, I had the case on my GoPro, may need to get a microphone in future or dub over them later, but that’s takes out the fun in it all.
Initially I launched from behind the Sovereign centre in Eastbourne, with about an hour or so left of the ebb.
I anchored up on a little spot where I had been catching Plaice before and had logged this on my GPS for future reference, I even managed to get the warp right, Approx 35ftlong on the anchor so I was practically over the top of the spot. 👍
Bait was Lug worm, Bluey, Squid and Sandeel once again all from Fresh and Frozen Crabs. Thoroughly recommend these guys for all your bait needs and now you can get some bits of end tackle too.
Rigs this trip were a 3 hook flowing trace with some great and black beads and some holographic spinner blades for the plaice and size 2 hooks on the lighter spinning rod paired with a 4000 sized fixed spool reel and a 3ox “watch” type lead.
The ‘big’ rod, 12-20lb rod with a Abu 6500 multiplier was tackled up with a 6oz grip lead with a 4/0 pennel on a flowing trace aimed at Bass and maybe some Rays.
Bites were forthcoming and baits were being robbed as soon as they hit the deck, but after 2 or 3 casts I managed to hook one, a lovely 25cm Plaice, released to fight again.
This went on for about an hour or so when Jake and Ryan launched from the harbour end of the point, they looked like a couples of battle ships comping towards me on their Hobies peddling away!!
We had a quick catch up, checked our radios and decided to paddle up towards the Pier and anchor up for a bit down near Cambridge Road, and renowned spot for Plaice and Rays.
As I was about to reel in the big rod, I had a decent bite and it rattled off! I was surprised as it had been tapping away for a while and thought those bait robbing whiting had been at it. This was not the case....a lovely 38cm Plaice on a whole squid and lug wrap on a 4/0 pennel!!
I upped anchor and tried in vein to catch Jake and Ryan who were calmly peddling away towards Eastbourne pier to anchor up.
After settling down at the new mark, I logged this one on my GPS and started fishing. First cast resulted in a 32cm Plaice.....wow the move looked good after all. Jake even radio’d over saying there were fish EVERYWHERE on his fish finder.
I had one more tiny plaice, I tried to measure it but it flapped out of my hand and back into the water. It was only around 25/26cm anyway and certainly would have been released.
They I had a lovely pull down on the spinning rod and had a brief but hard battle with something very weighty.....it was pulling and flapping but it soon pulled the hook and got away...as this a Ray, seemed like it.
I decided to pull anchor again and go back to the point and try another little spot I had been eyeing up over the last few weeks, a nice paddle of 15mins or so and I was back behind the Sovereign Centre on a new mark.
Same baits and rigs and I had a few more tell tale bites and Plaice before the wind decided to push in and make things very uncomfortable....safety first, up with the anchor and back to shore.
Overall I had 12 Plaice and kept 4 for the table. The rest were released on the kayak or once ashore (kept in a net bag in the water).
