Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I am starting a large mosaic project this week! I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti.
0:42 The first design is Moses striking a rock, and water is pouring forth in the desert. The other two designs are Moses parting the sea and baby Moses being pulled from the Nile river.
1:12 I unroll the full sized design! It is 30" x 75". I show the door that I purchased to fit the whole mosaic. Then I show the fountain that the mosaics will be mounted on. I took a friend to help me field verify the openings for the mosaics. The only way to do it was to climb in!
2:58 It is the next day, and I've made a few changes around my studio. I cleaned up my studio! Everything that was under my table has been moved and I pulled the table away from the wall because I couldn't reach the whole thing. Now I can work on it from all sides if needed.
3:50 Yay! I've installed a shop light and now I can see so much better! It was long overdue.
5:18 I start covering the design with clear contact paper. This allows me to use silicone over the mesh and it will not stick to the design.
6:02 Over the contact paper, I cut and tape a piece of alkali resistant fiberglass mesh.
6:40 I show my field measurements of the actual fountain. I will be using the top of the niche as being the true measurement.
7:54 I'm going to start with Moses. (NOT JOSEPH!) I printed out just that part of the design. I show the main skin color, which will be a bit more swarthy in tone due to Moses being from the middle east and out in the desert wandering around.
