In her first internationally-directed speech since being released, now former Senator of the Philippines Leila de Lima delivered the keynote speech for our side event at the March 2024 annual meeting of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna: "After a Drug War: Ending Extrajudicial Drug War Killings and Extending Transitional Justice for Victims" Senator de Lima, who is awaiting final resolution of the last remaining false case that allies of former President Duterte brought against her, joined the meeting via Zoom.
Also on Zoom was panelist Montse Ferrer of Amnesty International. In person we had an introduction by David Borden of DRCNet Foundation AKA StoptheDrugWar.org, presentations by panelists Zaved Mahmood of the UN Office of the High Commission on Human Rights; and Socorro Reyes, supporter and former university professor of Leila de Lima. Fr. Albert Alejo SJ, a noted human rights advocate from the Philippines who is currently faculty at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, moderated.
