STORYLINE:
China's Foreign Minister said on Sunday that India and China should view each other as "partners" not "rivals”.
“An opportunity instead of threat. Second, we must uphold good neighborliness and friendship and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the border areas,” Wang Yi said to the media on the sidelines of an annual meeting of China’s ceremonial legislature.
The top-ranking diplomat told reporters that both countries “should follow the direction set by our leaders, remove interference and advance toward the same goals.”
"Mutual trust and cooperation is beneficial to the development of the two countries, while division and confrontation is detrimental to the rejuvenation of Asia," Wang added at the news conference.
He also commented on last August's meeting between Chinese President Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin, a regional political, economic and security group founded by China.
"It brought about further improvement in China-India relations."
Wang Yi met with Modi August last year to ease tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors after a years-long standoff between the Asian powers.
In 2024, Xi and Modi met on the sidelines of a BRICS Summit in Russia and announced a border accord aimed at ending a then four-year-old standoff involving tens of thousands of their soldiers in mountainous Ladakh.
