China is waging an all-out war against anime. From cosplayers being attacked in public to entire anime events being cancelled, the crackdown has escalated to a shocking new level. Even at Tianfuhong, China’s biggest anime shopping mall, otaku gatherings have turned violent, with police involved and people ending up in the hospital.
In this video we look at the growing anti-anime movement in China, and why ordinary otaku and cosplayers are being harassed, banned, and even arrested simply for wearing outfits inspired by Japanese culture and popular anime like Attack on Titan, Death Note, and My Hero Academia have completely been banned from Chinese television.
What started as small incidents of harassment has grown into a massive political and cultural battle between China and Japan, with anime and cosplay caught in the middle.
