In this video, young mechanic Aiman will show you a couple of ways to test to see if your engine auxiliary water pump is working properly and have good suction. This auxiliary water pump is from a 2009 Toyota Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive I4 1.5L (which is the same as model years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008). An auxiliary water pump is different than a single water pump in that it is an electrically controlled motor. Its primary use is circulating water by way of a bypass hose from the main coolant lines to a heater core that is used to collect heat and distribute warm air into your vehicle when the heater is turned on.
There are many methods to test the pump, and in most cases you don't have to take it out from its mounting. You can use Power Probe III, a multi-meter, an old computer PC power supply or any other contraptions that's connected to a 12V DC power. The pump motor may be working but it may not have enough suction.
Not all cars have auxiliary pump, but it is common for many vehicles, especially hybrid cars & heavy duty pick-ups to have an auxiliary water pump that will expedite the process of coolant from the radiator, through the engine block, to a heater core, and then back to the radiator.
In Prius, the circulation of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) coolant is a little bit complicated. Coolant will circulate from radiator to Heat Storage Tank (CHRS) to Auxiliary Water Pump via Coolant Flow Control Valve to the heater core, then to the engine block and then back to the radiator.
If an auxiliary water pump in Prius is not working, you may get air trapped in the heater core producing air bubbles and causing the vehicle to overheat and possibly that dreaded red triangle of death with temperature sign icon on the dashboard display. If you hear sloshing or swishing noise inside the cabin near the middle of the dashboard where the heater core is, then you have air bubbles in the heater core and the entire ICE coolant system has to be re-bled properly. We have a separate video on how to bleed the system as well videos on how to drain the coolant, how to replace the auxiliary water pump, how to remove and replace the coolant flow control valve and many more Prius related DYI auto repair ideas.
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Water Pump (Auxiliary):
1. No warm air is coming from the heater
2. Heater has fluctuating heat
3. Window defrost is not working
4. High pitched buzzing sound from under your dashboard
This auxiliary water heater pump (Part# 87200-47030) looks almost the same especially in size to that of the pump for the coolant heat storage thank, but they're actually different and usually cost more.
Here are the part number for the other 3 pumps:
Primary electric pump - 16100-29157-83
Coolant heat storage pump - 16290-21011
Inverter coolant pump - G9020-47031
