Here's a fairly detailed look at switching operations in Metra/BNSF's commuter coach yard south of Union Station in Chicago, featuring what is now, and has been for some time, the resident freight unit, BNSF 2661, a GP39-3 in the Heritage III paint scheme. The loco rarely seems to wander away from the "Zephyr Pit", though it has recently been seen as far away as Galesburg in local freight service. The yard owes its colloquial name to its CB&Q Railway heritage, when it served the 'Zephyrs' and other passenger trains of the "Q". It has served BN and BNSF/Metra commuter trains since the 1970s. Activity of other Metra trains and Amtrak also make appearances here. The crew was friendly, and stopped to chat with me at one point- a little surprising, given the weather that turned from sleet to heavy snow in short order. This was all filmed from the shopping center parking garage at Roosevelt Road and Canal Street.
~Thanks for watching!~
