Fun bike ride in the hills above Tavira Portugal.

Having decided to retire, we're in the middle of an 85 day trip to explore Europe. We started with about three weeks in Porto- more videos on that later. Then on November 1, we transitioned here to Tavira and are enjoying the great restaurants, food, and several bike rides,

Rather than rent a bike, I bought a 45 Euro beater from a guy on FB marketplace. Tires needed some air. Handlebars wiggled loose, fixed via Allen wrench. Otherwise, it's been super, Oh, except the brakes are not quite up to the challenge.

Grinding climbs, brake-melting descents, and ridiculous views over the Algarve – this “Tavira Hills Ride” turned into way more than a chill pedal to the ocean. I start with a 300-foot climb to a ridge with insane sea views and almost no cars, then drop into a tiny hidden valley on a narrow road where my brakes are literally too hot to touch.

Down at river level the trail suddenly kicks straight back up. The gravel is so steep and loose I have to push the bike like a 10-year-old, stopping to catch my breath, check the map, and wonder how far this thing really goes. All the while there’s a tiny hamlet, a seasonal river, and one remote farmhouse with a pool perched on the hillside like a movie set.

By the time I finally reach the top again, I’m racing the clock to get back, still chasing glimpses of the ocean and weaving along the ridge with nonstop “wow” moments. If you like real-life adventure rides, big climbs, sketchy descents, and off-the-map Portugal scenery, you’re gonna love this one.
