High grain prices are anything but pleasing to noodle-lovers. The average Italian eats 28 kilos of pasta each year. But that's become an expensive pleasure. Wheat prices have driven pasta prices up - noodles were 15 percent more expensive this February than last!
Bread, milk, and other foodstuffs have also risen in price. The consumer protection associations say Italians will spend 445 euros more on groceries this year. Add that to the 490-euro increase in energy consumption and it's no wonder many Italians can no longer make ends meet.
How is this problem being dealt with? One noodle manufacturer has increased pay after determining that his workers couldn't survive on the old wages. A pasta cook offers a low-price lunch; at least that way she still has some customers. Housewives go to the open-air market to cut costs. Philipp Zahn reports.
