The injustice of racial segregation affected every sector of Bermudian life, including healthcare and healthcare professions.
The Cottage Hospital, the first civilian hospital in Bermuda, operated with a whites only staff and training policy. It ceased operations after King Edward VII Memorial Hospital opened in 1920. KEMH operated with the same discriminatory policy for another three decades.
Despite these injustices, black Bermudian nurses persevered, leaving an indelible mark on the practice of nursing locally and internationally.
