Highlander is a very popular casual constructed format for Magic.

The name Highlander is a reference to the movie of the same name, which had the well known mantra, "There can be only one". A highlander deck has the restriction that there can be only one...of each cards, except of course for basic lands.

As such, a Highlander deck may not contain two cards with the same English name except basic land cards.

Highlander decks must contain at least 100 cards, but unlike Commander they are allowed to exceed 100 cards.

Sideboards are not allowed

Because this player created format takes its name from a copyrighted intellectual property, Wizards of the Coast feels it must refer to it officially as 100 Card Singleton.

This is the same reason why, when EDH, short for Elder Dragon Highlander, became so popular that Wizards of the Coast wanted to begin marketing the format, they officially renamed it Commander.

In fact, Commander's origin comes from the Highlander format. Commander, or Elder Dragon Highlander originated when the concept of a General or Commander for your Highlander deck was conceived.

The final difference between EDH/Commander and Highlander is that Highlander can much more easily be played competitively.

Although Highlander remains largely a casual format, some locations such as Victoria, Canada and Berlin, Germany have large, vibrant competitive Highlander tournaments. It has also enjoyed an ebb and flow on Magic: Online.

Since the recent changes that have allowed Highlander to be sanctionable by game stores, more and more small communities of competitive Highlander play is popping up.
