Fly fishing that section of the Madison River, which runs from its origin at Madison Junction (where the Gibbon and Firehole rivers meet) downstream toward the West Yellowstone entrance, is a classic park-and-wade experience. No boats are allowed in this stretch within the park. The river here is broad and relatively gentle, flowing with long runs and sweeping bends, making it very accessible for wading anglers.
This stretch holds impressive populations of wild rainbow and brown trout. It was August, the weather was perfect. The spawning season is the river's main event. That doesn't typically start until mid-September. The spawn peaks in October. At that time massive brown trout move out of Hebgen Lake and swim up into the park to spawn.
Large rainbow trout often follow the browns up the river. They feed on the eggs of the poor brown trout. Part of the natural pedator/prey relationship that plays out all over Yellowstone National Park.
This gorgeous stretch of river draws anglers from all over the world. It's one of the best opportunities to target trophy-sized brown trout (some over 25 inches). These browns become more aggressive and territorial during their pre-spawn and spawning activities.
