The True Meaning of Christmas, toy photography.
Hello and welcome back to another behind the scenes toy photography video!
This week, I'm going to show you how to get into the Holiday spirit. I call this shot: The True Meaning of Christmas.
I'll also show you my editing process!
This may not be relatable, but for me personally, the true meaning of Christmas has always been getting free Star Wars stuff. This week I wanted to take a shot that evoked the sense of glee that so many little Star Wars nerds feel on Christmas morning.
After creating a simple diorama with a piece of wood paneling and some carved Styrofoam, I posed and placed my figures. I used the kids from Skeleton Crew and tried to match their gifts with their characterization.
Neel got some action figures because he's a dorky little kid, Fern got a pilot's helmet since she loves racing, KB got a little droid Funko Pop since I assume she's into robotics, and of course I gave Wim a lightsaber since he's obsessed with the Jedi.
With my characters in place, I filled out the rest of the scene around them. I wrapped some battery powered fairy lights around these little replica Christmas trees to make the room feel cozy and wintery.
Next, I placed an LED panel light in my hearth to create the glow of the fireplace, and covered up the back with another piece of carved Styrofoam.
After that, I added more presents to cover up the gaps in my my background, and tossed some opened wrapping paper around my foreground to add a little visual interest.
Finally, I positioned a small spotlight to create some lightsaber glow on Wim.
Here's my starting image. My main goal for this edit was to add some special effects. I began by using a layer mask to brush in a second exposure with my lightsaber glow. Then I added adjustment layers for levels, and colour balance.
Using the pen tool, brush tool, and layer effects I created the lightsaber blade.
Following that, I used the healing brush tool and content aware fill to remove all the articulation joints on my toys.
After adding a warm photo filter, I used the dodge and burn tools to further refine the lighting on my subjects.
Lastly, I used some custom brushes, blurring and layer masking to add some flames to the fireplace in the background.
So once again, here's my starting image. And here's where I ended up!
Thank you so much for watching.
