Troubleshoot and fix outboard motor trim relay - which one to replace? Boat repairs.

Описание: The outboard motor trim on my boat wouldn't go down intermittently. I could trim up, but not down at times. What is the issue? The trim relay? The trim switch? or something else?

Many outboard boat motors have a 2 relay trim system. The trim switch energizes the up or down relay causing the motor to go up or down. So which relay is bad when it won't go down? You would think the down relay, right? Not necessarily!

Some say swap the relays and if the problem follows the relay, then you know which relay it is. But this is only HALF RIGHT. A 2 wire, 2 relay trim system uses reversing polarity to make the trim motor go up or down. That means that BOTH relays are in use no matter which direction you trim. The energized relay provides the positive current, and the non-energized relay provides the ground path back to the battery. If the problem with the relay is in the non-energized state, then swapping will tell you nothing.
