Saturday, April 2, 2011
Mary Harris Auditorium on the RMCAD Campus
VASD Program Coordinator 2010-12 Anna Mascorella
Vinton is the world-renowned inventor of "Claymation," having coined and trademarked the term, and created some of the most innovative dimensional animation in history. As a producer and director, Vinton has received five Academy Award Nominations for Best Animated Short Film, including The Great Cognito, The Creation, and Rip Van Winkle, as well as a nomination for Best Visual Effects for his feature film, Return to OZ. Vinton is internationally recognized as a pioneer of 3D animation and the creator of some of the field's most successful animated characters including The California Raisins, the M&Ms, the Domino's Pizza "Noid," "Ray Raisin" and "Michael Raisin" (with voices Ray Charles and Michael Jackson), and the Eddie Murphy-inspired "Thurgood Stubbs." He has created animated comedy entertainment for nearly every market—from short films to features, specials to television series, and commercials to theme parks.
Vinton continues to explore, promote, and instruct the art and craft of stop motion animation and Claymation in new films, gallery and museum exhibitions, and in classes and workshops intended to further 3D animation art forms. In his RMCAD lecture, "The Evolution of Claymation and Growth of 3D Animation," he provides a history of his exciting career and focus on the key milestones of animation, along with the changes in the audience and industry that have led to a worldwide renaissance in 3D animation.

An integral part of the educational mission of Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, the Visiting Artist-Scholar-Designer Program fosters vision, creativity and innovation by bringing leading national and international artists, scholars and designers to campus. The guests engage with RMCAD students and faculty through private events, such as studio visits, gallery talks and workshops that provide direct access to contemporary art, design and culture through an inspiring comparative framework. The VASD Program at RMCAD ultimately serves the entire community by hosting a free public evening lecture given by each distinguished guest. The videos included in the VASD video channel are a living archive of these free public presentations.
