At the age of 76, Master Tara Singh pledged to fast unto death for the creation of a separate Punjabi speaking state in 1961. He ended it after 47 days, when Nehru agreed to consider the issue. Sikh political forces however shunned him for his perceived failure and it ended his political career.
The creation of a Punjabi speaking state occurred later in 1966, where Punjab was further reduced in size.
Interestingly, one can see the then Maharaja of Patiala in the video as well.
Master Tara Singh passed away in 1967.
