Welcome to Night Science!
Every planet in our solar system will end a human in minutes. In this Documentary for Sleep, we visit every world from Venus to Pluto and calculate exactly how long you would survive on each one. Then we explore how humanity actually plans to colonize these hostile worlds and build civilizations among the stars.
We start on Venus, where the Soviet Venera 13 lander survived just 127 minutes before being destroyed by 475 degree Celsius heat and 92 atmospheres of pressure. We stand on Mercury as the son rises and radiation levels spike past lethal doses in 15 minutes. We walk on Mars during a deceptively pleasant afternoon before the dust, radiation, and thin atmosphere reveal the planets true nature. We fall through Jupiter's atmosphere past storms larger than Earth. We stand on Europa's frozen surface above an ocean twice the volume of all Earth's water. We visit Titan, the only moon with a dense atmosphere, where methane rain falls from orange skies and a human could fly using nothing but wings and muscle power.
Then we explore the real colonization plans. SpaceX Starship and the Mars timeline delays. NASA's bioplastic habitat breakthroughs. Venus cloud cities that float on breathable air. Titan colonies powered by limitless hydrocarbon fuel. Europa Clipper's mission to investigate an alien ocean for signs of life. And the Stanford Torus and O'Neill Cylinder space habitat designs that could one day house billions of people.
Topics covered: Venus surface conditions, Venera 13 mission, Mercury radiation, Mars colonization SpaceX Starship, Jupiter atmosphere Galileo probe, Europa Clipper mission, Europa subsurface ocean, Titan atmosphere methane lakes, Titan protocell research, Saturn atmosphere, Uranus Neptune ice giants, Pluto New Horizons, NASA CHAPEA Mars simulation, HAVOC Venus airship concept, Stanford Torus space habitat, O'Neill Cylinder, asteroid mining, space radiation effects human body, SANS spaceflight neuro ocular syndrome, planetary habitability, Dragonfly Titan mission, James Webb Space Telescope Europa discoveries, Fermi Paradox, solar system colonization, Kosmos 482 Venus lander reentry, NASA GEER Venus simulation, bioplastic Mars habitats Harvard study
Watch until the end to see the complete survival rankings for every planet and moon, and discover which worlds humanity might colonize first.
