Top 15 Flows in Battle Rap:
Going to be going over the top 15 flows in battle rap.
Will be considering two different factors - the quality of the flow and the uniqueness of the flow. For example - Tricky is on the list. I don’t think a discussion of flow in battle rap is complete without mentioning Tricky P. That being said, if I made a list of the top five BEST flows in battle rap - would he be on it? Probably not.
BUT at the same time his absence on a video dedicated to flow would make the video incomplete in my opinion.
So - to recap this is a mix of the best flows in battle rap AND the best flows in battle rap uniqueness aside. There is no ranking to this list - other than the final guy on here who clearly, undoubtedly has the greatest flow in all of battle rap. Lets go
So what is flow? I like rapping manual.com’s definition of flow entailing two criteria:
1. The overall quality of the rhyme sceme
and 2. The overall quality of the intonational techniques.
For more info… honestly just google it - but one thing I want to emphasize is that flow isn’t only how something is said but also how it is written. On top of that, the working together of these two qualities is also important.
Ok…. so finally lets do this list.
Number One - Remy D
Remy D - 336 pass, 410 Yung Ill
Remy D’s flow is certainly one of the most flavorful on the list - which is greatly esentuated by his St Louis accent. His accent - combined a large use of mutli syllabic rhymes and a frequent change in tempo creates one of the most unique flows in battle rap.
Joey Jihad :20
Joey Jihad’s flow is the quintessential classical Philly flow. Bouncy, melodic, and a constant change in tempo.
Despite not being active in battle rap for over a decade - I felt that a list that did not include Jihad was an incomplete one.
Tricky P 1320 SHazam, 2055 Charron
Unlike many on this list - Tricky P’s flow has a range in uniqueness. At times, Tricky’s flow doesn’t sound unlike most others - but at other times Tricky’s signature flow is far more apparent. *
Tricky’s highly melofic “doo-wap” style flow isn’t necessarily complex - just very unique. However, as of lately, I have have seen Tricky use this flow less and less often.
Bill - 230 d boy, 1350 e ness
Before we get any further intro this - I just want to say one thing - Bill Collector is from Norristown - not Philadelphia. I want to make that clear because Norristown feel strongly about that.
That being said - Bill Collector’s flow is about as unorthodox as they come in battle rap. One large influence on this is that Bill Collector openly states that he writes to a beat. Even without him saying this this… you can tell.
Another interesting thing about Bill’s style of flow is that he often seems to have a huge number of different flows within a single battle - going from bouncy to rapid fire to cool and laid back - you never knew what flow Bill is going to come with next.
Ness Lee - 555 (saurus), 1340 Loe
Ness Lee’s flow can best be described in one word - seamless. This butter smooth approach combined with his Georgia accent creates a highly unique flow.
While most battle rappers have sacrificed flow - Ness uses his ability to effortlessly weave in and out of flow patterns - to still make his lines hit hard.
Philly Swain - 145 k shine, 655 pass
A huge influence in Philly Swain’s style is in his name - being from Philadelphia, Swain grew up around unique battle flows.
A big distinction that I can make between Swain and the classic Philadelphia flow is that Swain’s change of flow style and speed is totally his own. Unlike others on this list who have changes in speed - Swain’s flow will often completely change without warning or or any transition at all.
Rone - 1825 big t, 1140 dna
Rone is from and has influences in early Philly battle rap. However - he has taken those influences and given it his own unique twist - adding more multi syllabic rhyming and double times. One of Ron’e regular flow techniques is to include a large number of comparisons, questions, or list of items - that ends in a big bang.
Rone’s unique flow has not disappeared or lessened - but to the contrary has grown significantly over the years.
E Ness - 830 Iron, 1135 Hazey
Ness’ flow is yet another that has roots in the classic Philadelphia flow. Early in Ness’ on camera battle career he battled over a beat - then over a beat playing in his ears - then, a beat playing in his head. The way that Ness esentuaties syllables and tones to get the effect he wants is very unique and larely unparalled.
Other than having one of the most unique flows in the history of battle rap - E Ness also has THE greatest flow in the history of battle rap. Talk any category in battle rap and talk down on Ness and I won’t prot
