Montelobos Mezcal Artesenal Espadin Joven is an 100% organic mezcal that is "hand made" (meaning manual labor intensivtraditional methods. It is made from sustainably grown, 100% Espaldin or Carribean agave that is stone pit cooked and then mule powered stone mill extracted. It is then open wood vat fermented without added yeast before being triple distilled in wood fired copper pot stills at Montelobos distillery, NOM 0156X. It comesss un at 86.4 proof. I picked it up from @leisersliquors for $34. My bottle number is T00179

Montelobos is nearly transparent but has good legs on the swirl.
On the nose, burnt wood can be smelt before the glass is lifted. It gives burnt wood, cooked agave and hints of tropical fruit.
It is mouth coating on the sip. On the palate it sweet with cooked agave, burnt wood ash through the sip. At mid palate a slightly pineapple and tanin join in. The finish adds a hint of mocha that sits atop the ash and agave notes. It is long with smoky sweet ash. An interesting sip. It definitely tastes like it would work in smoky scotch cocktails, so we put that to the test in a Rusty Nail and it was great. We then tried it in a complex cocktail, The Poseidon. It was awesome with Montelobos passing all its notes to the cocktail. Considering all this, Montelobos Mezcal Artesenal Espadin Joven is 100% Blue Pig Approved!.

THE POSEIDON COCKTAIL
INGREDIENTS:
1 oz mezcal
0.75 oz Cynar
0.5 oz aged white rum
0.5 oz Cointreau or dry curacao
0.25 oz Punt e Mes
2 dashes orange bitters
2 dashes saline solution
Orange and lime wedges for garnish
METHOD:
Chill a coupe or rocks glass.
In a mixing glass filled with ice add all ingredients.
Stir until well-chilled.
Strain in to chilled coupe or Rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with lime and orange wedges.
