It’s March 2nd and we are officially kicking off the 2026 planting season here at Maze Valley! 🚜 Today, I'm out in the "Bomb Shelter" field at the K&D Home Farm planting a crop of oats.
This field is a bit of a challenge with its sandy soil, but that’s exactly why we can get out here so early. I’m also sharing the story of why we call it the "Bomb Shelter" field—it actually has a real cinder block shelter from the 1960s tucked into the hillside! 🛡️
We’re trying something a little different this year by planting more oats and fewer soybeans. I'm working with Hartville Elevator on this project, and even though there isn't much money in row crop farming these days, we’re finding creative ways to keep the farm relevant and functional.
