The latest book on the actor on Am azon is - CLARK GABLE HOLLYWOOD'S KING
This book is one for the Clark Gable devotees, because the author has scoured thousands of vintage newspapers to pull up tiny details about the great man that have lain forgotten. The text contains many of the sources for the facts which are contradictory, so readers can draw their own conclusions.
Clark journeyed far from his Iowa hometown, and his route was not the easiest way. He didn't see a professional show until he became an adult. Clark worked in manual jobs until his first wife tutored him in acting. She found Clark to be complex and serious, but on-screen he was the playful rogue, happy-go-lucky with a mischievous glint in his eye.
Clark became a company man at MGM. He was compared to Rudolph Valentino and Ramon Novarro, but was deemed a new kind of lover - masculine and all-American. He affected men's fashion, by popularising the turtleneck and denting the sales of undershirts. Clark was frightened of playing the British, Fletcher Christian, but the actor thrilled audiences when he sailed on to the screen. Women lauded Clark in fan letters and flocked to his films. While he had a wealthy second wife, there were widely published stories of an affair with Joan Crawford and a shipboard romance with a dancer.
Clark was a benevolent king. He was good-humoured on-set, and gave countless interviews to the press. He signed many autographs, and knew how to get along with people. Loretta Young observed that he'd start a card game when people became restless, and would win when he wanted, or lose when it seemed diplomatic. The gossip columns linked Clark to Loretta for a while, and this book details the same parties where they were both guests over the years.
Rhett Butler was a big role to fill, but the King of Hollywood proved he was worthy of this title. The public knew who they wanted for Rhett, but some unknowns were considered, such as James Craig, Matthew Ferguson and Anthony Averill. This biography presents the most expansive and detailed account of Clark's time on Gone With the Wind. After one scene where Rhett strutted out, Clark turned and said, "Boy, was that exit a hameroo," and everybody laughed. When Rhett yanked Scarlett from the bed for a scene, Vivien Leigh was sent spinning across the room and had to grip an arc light to stop herself from falling. The two leads were in love, but not with each other.
Clark had found his queen in Carole Lombard. Although known as a screwball, she endured many woes and weak health. Clark looked after her at their ranch and they wowed Atlanta together. Carole talked to Margaret Mitchell about the chickens they raised, and Clark thanked the author for giving him the greatest role of his life. The Gables' happiness would be cut short by Carole's demise in a plane crash, when she wanted to hurry home for retakes on her latest movie.
Clark was determined to enlist, and took perilous flights over Europe. In England, he socialised with David Niven and a daughter of Winston Churchill. Clark would make three films abroad, and his celebrity allowed him to move in more society circles. His short-lived, fourth marriage was to Lady Sylvia Ashley - because she made him laugh. The columnists followed Clark's dates with different women, such as Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell, Betty Grable and Ann Sothern. He danced with Marilyn Monroe, but they never dated.
Clark's fragile heart was won by a former model and bit part actress, Kay Williams. (She had once been on a list to be considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara.) Clark found a peace when they married, and he treated her two children as his own. Clark was paid a generous sum for his final film, The Misfits. He was always proud to be a motion picture personality. Clark never wanted to appear on television, but that is where his films continue to be enjoyed forever. Long Live the King.
