Resident Evil 2 is a 2019 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. A remake of the 1998 game Resident Evil 2, it was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in January 2019 and for Amazon Luna, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch in 2022. Versions for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS were released in December 2024. Players control the rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and the college student Claire Redfield as they attempt to escape Raccoon City during a zombie outbreak.

Capcom considered remaking Resident Evil 2 following the release of the remake of the first Resident Evil in 2002, but the producer, Shinji Mikami, did not want to divert development from Resident Evil 4 (2005). Capcom announced the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2015 and released the first trailer and gameplay footage at E3 2018. It was built on the RE Engine, which was also used for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Resident Evil 2 received acclaim for its presentation, gameplay and faithfulness to the original. It won the Golden Joystick Award for Game of the Year and was nominated for the Game Award for Game of the Year. By August 2025, it had sold 15.8 million copies, becoming the best-selling Resident Evil game. It was followed by the remakes of Resident Evil 3 in 2020 and Resident Evil 4 in 2023.

Resident Evil 2, also known as BIOHAZARD RE:2 (バイオハザード RE:2?) in Japan, is a Survival Horror game developed by Capcom's R&D Division 1 studio. It is a remake of 1998's Resident Evil 2, described by Capcom as a "reimagining" and first announced on 12 August 2015 by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and released worldwide on 25 January 2019 for the PlayStation, Xbox One and Windows operating systems.

Unlike the 2002 Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 2 was not developed with the intent of improving the original. Rather than improving the visuals and polishing the same script, this game is instead more a "reimagining" of the original story, with redesigned maps, characters and story elements.

Gameplay mechanics are more similar to 2017's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which also used the RE Engine, though with the use of an over-the-shoulder camera. Like that game, the Japanese version was subject to unique censoring to remove the more gory sequences.

Resident Evil 2 is the first entry in the series to receive a Chinese-language Dub. It is also the first entry to credit all of the different language voice casts.

As of October 29th 2025, Resident Evil 2 Remake officially sold 16.3 million copies since its release, which makes it the highest selling game in the series, surpassing Resident Evil 5.
