You might be surprised to know that the Internet is free. But, why we have to pay a fee to access internet?
Internet was invented in America and when it started to expand, Some companies were found who connected other countries by developing the network through optic fibre cables under the sea and oceans. Those companies are called Internet Service Provider (ISP). These ISPs have 3 levels. Tier 1 ISP owns the submarine cables which are very costly. Tier 2 companies are the companies that provide Internet service within a country and Tier 3 companies are local ISPs. Tata Communications is Tier 1 company of India and all other Tier 2 ISPs pay a transit fee to Tata Communications for providing internet to their subscribers. The maps of all the underwater cables is available at www.submarinecablemap.com and www.cablemap.info More than 12 lakh kilometres of optic fibre cables handle over 95% of the total internet traffic. Internet speed depends on the quality of these cables.
