It’s always been about social justice for me and ensuring that I’m able to represent the underdog or somebody who needs to be empowered in the law, and when I went to my careers advisor I said, ‘This is what I want to do,’ and they said, ‘It’s going to be really difficult. First of all you’re a woman and second you’re black,’ and I thought, well, that’s going to give me even more motivation to actually pursue a career as a lawyer and to prove that everyone deserves an opportunity to be who they want to be.

Our employment team, we are the number one experts in employment law. I myself have a Master’s Degree in employment law. I also sit on the Law Society Employment Law committee. We have a wide range of clients from diverse backgrounds. You can learn so much different skills and experience as a lawyer, which you can take into all walks of life. No-one should be held back regardless of their race, origin, nationality, gender, disability, or sexual orientation and this is really important that no-one can feel that someone will deny them any opportunity to pursue their career and what they want to do. You know what motivates me is that an employer thinks that they can abuse their power and treat their employees without any dignity and respect and I’m able to point out where that is unlawful and also unfair and that they have legal protection through the law and use the law to provide my clients with remedies and also compensation. My parents always used to say you should become a lawyer because you are so full of justice and that was my passion and I continued.
