notes with timestamps: (this song is from 2004)
0:01 Stunde Null ("Hour Zero"). A devastated Germany has to re-start from scratch in 1945. The building shown is the Reichstag (which is featured again at the end). The text reads "to the German people" (ie. "dedicated to the German people")
0:06 The man with the camera throughout the video is the singer Peter Heppner. He wrote the lyrics. He is from Hamburg in the former West Germany. Paul van Dyk is a music producer and trance DJ. He grew up in communist East Berlin. Van Dyk appears a couple of times later in the video.
0:32 Trümmerfrauen ("Rubble-women"). With so many men dead, wounded or in POW camps, it was largely women who cleared up the debris.
1:00 I probably should have included "at all" here. He says "about what has just been, one would rather not speak at all anymore".
1:07 Berlin Airlift (1948-49).
1:12 Here we stand. This might be a reference to Martin Luther's defiant statement at the Diet of Worms in 1521. ("Here I stand. I can do no other. So help me God. Amen") although the word order in the song is a little different ("wir stehen hier", whereas Luther is traditionally quoted as saying "hier stehe ich")
1:12 Das Wunder von Bern ("The Miracle of Bern"). West Germany beat favourites Hungary in 1954 World Cup Final. This was a big deal at the time and gave Germans a real lift. Even today every German knows about this match.
