"Six Man Band" is an autobiographical song by the American sunshine pop group The Association, released in 1968. Written by founding member Terry Kirkman, the track marked a departure from the band’s typical soft-rock harmonies toward a harder, more "electrified" sound.
The song was released as a mono single in July 1968 and later appeared on their platinum-certified album, Greatest Hits, in November of that year. It reached #47 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The lyrics describe the life of a traveling "California man" and his band, emphasizing their transition to playing their own instruments—a response to industry rumors that they relied solely on session musicians like The Wrecking Crew.
A later live version, often titled "Seven Man Band," appeared on their 1970 album Live after Jules Alexander rejoined the group.
