A huge crowd paid a heartfelt tribute to Thailand's late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Saturday afternoon, by gathering to sing the royal anthem outside Bangkok's Grand Palace where his body lies in state.
Thai police estimated over 150,000 people had gathered in the Sanam Luang area of Bangkok by 13:00. Many more were expected to arrive by the end of the day, with authorities estimating that up to 400,000 people would come down to take part in the event
Many Thais took the opportunity to bid a final personal farewell to their departed monarch.
On the green outside the Grand Palace, where the King's funeral pyre will eventually be built, the crowd prepared to sing the royal anthem, a song that is as familiar to them as the country's national anthem.
The song, written at the turn of the last century, is played at the beginning and end of the day on TV and radio stations as well as in cinemas, concert halls, and theaters.
Backed by a 100 piece orchestra, the crowd broke into song as a farewell to the king, whose body lies in state behind the walls of the palace.
The event was being filmed by one of Thailand's most celebrated directors as a tribute to the late king. More on:http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20161023...
