The letter arrived at Dartmouth College’s fledgling Department of Experimental Psychology, postmarked from Milbrook, Vermont, and signed by Dr. Octavia Mendelson, the only physician within twenty miles who still made house calls on horseback when the back roads turned to ice. Dated September 18, 1934, it described—in careful, almost reluctant medical prose—what the doctor called “a phenomenon that defies conventional understanding.” At its center was a 47-year-old widow named Agnes Talbot, a woman most of the town had known all her life and yet, somehow, no longer recognized.
