"An effort is accomplished already in the direction of the birth of this famous Palestinian state, we are looking for since years and years. And they really open, something, another time, you know, this is magic and alchemy, the chemistry in between two people. It is not enough but it was a good beginning. And I think Mr Ehud Olmert or Mr Abu Mazen, they were talking with the same words for the necessity of the success of this conference. But conference or meeting? I agree we didn't know about it. For the moment, this is not enough for us. If it is enough for them, this is a beginning "

STORYLINE:
Visiting French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Thursday, as part of his five-nation Mideast tour.
Kouchner also held a joint news conference with his Egyptian counterpart, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
Both foreign ministers spoke about the Arab-Israeli peace process and about a US-sponsored international peace conference slated to be held in the United States in November.
Kouchner said "a good beginning" had been made.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held talks in Jerusalem on Monday and agreed to set up high-level working groups to further the aim of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Kouchner met Abbas - known familiarly as Abu Mazen - on Monday and Olmert on Tuesday and said he got upbeat reports from both men.
Speaking in Thursday's news conference, the French foreign minister said Olmert and Abbas "were talking with the same words for the necessity of the success of this conference."
US President George W Bush has called for the conference to re-energise the stalled peace process and tackle outstanding issues between Israelis and Palestinians, but the specific agenda remains uncertain.
Arab countries have been concerned that the conference will be symbolic without addressing the toughest issues of the Arab-Israeli conflict, such as the status of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees and the borders of a future Palestinian state.
Aboul Gheit said it was important that the meeting achieved goals.
"If this meeting was held and did not achieve any goals, and the goals have to push forward the peace process and negotiations between parties to lead to the establishment of Palestinian state, and if this goal has not been achieved than the consequences will be difficult," he said.
Earlier, Kouchner met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa.
The French foreign minister is also due to visit Lebanon.
Kouchner's trip to Beirut is an attempt to bridge the gap between rival factions in the Lebanese government and bring an end to eight months of political paralysis, which began with the resignation of six pro-Syrian ministers, five of them Shia, last November, over opposition demands for veto power in government.
