Out for another ride on my new Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, exploring some of the beautiful and historic countryside of Wiltshire - taking in Upavon, Old Sarum and the Woodford Valley.
I’ve now covered a couple of hundred miles on the Interceptor since buying it, and I have to say I’m still absolutely loving it. The more I ride this bike, the more I appreciate its simplicity and character. There’s something about that smooth parallel twin and relaxed riding position that just makes it a perfect companion for these kinds of countryside rides.
This route passes through some fascinating history as well. Upavon played an important role in early British military aviation, while Old Sarum was once an Iron Age hillfort, a Norman castle and even one of Britain’s most famous “rotten boroughs”. There’s also the old folklore story that the site of Salisbury Cathedral was chosen by firing an arrow from Old Sarum and building wherever it landed.
The ride then continues through the beautiful Woodford Valley including Wilsford cum Lake with Sting’s Lake House estate adding a some celebrity glitter to this very old landscape.
Here the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 really feels at home. It’s not about huge horsepower or chasing speed — it’s about enjoying the road, the scenery and the simple pleasure of riding a classic-style motorcycle through timeless countryside.
A couple of hundred miles in, and the Interceptor is already proving to be one of those bikes that just makes you want to keep riding.
