Elevation Post Kael sits at the highest accessible
point on the REDNOX eastern ridge — a tower built
for unobstructed horizon observation, staffed
continuously from Cycle 71 through Cycle 90,
logging every sunrise, every atmospheric event,
every anomaly worth noting across nineteen years
of clear record.

Eight hundred and four entries describe the sunrise
in varying terms — pale, grey, amber, orange,
occasionally pink in the storm seasons.
Entry 805 says: red.
Every entry after that says the same thing.
Still red.

The phone on the ceiling is a direct line to
REDNOX Central Command. It received an incoming
call every morning for six cycles beginning in
Cycle 90 — at sunrise, precisely, at the moment
the horizon changed color. The calls were received
and logged by the outpost communication system.
Nobody answered them.

Nobody answered them because by Cycle 90
the post was unstaffed. The last operator
had submitted a transfer request in Cycle 89,
citing personal reasons, and it had been granted.

The calls stopped in Cycle 96.
Six cycles of calling, every morning, at sunrise.
Six cycles of no answer.
Then silence.

The logbook is still open on the desk.
The last staffed entry reads: still red.
The sun came up red this morning.
The phone is quiet.
Whatever was calling has given up,
or found what it needed somewhere else,
or decided that if nobody was going to answer
there was no point in calling anymore.

The Archive would like to know who was calling.
We have asked. We have not been told.
