Storing binary data in DNA will require the synthesis of a very large number of unique oligonucleotide sequences. DNA in a biological context is considered a dual-use technology - it has incredibly positive uses in healthcare, agriculture and biomanufacturing but can also be misused to cause harm (e.g. by synthesizing, 'booting up' and distributing a dangerous virus). The nucleic acid synthesis industry has, since 2010, invested heavily in biosecurity screening systems to ensure companies understand any biological risk associated with sequences they are asked to manufacture and that each customer has a legitimate use for the ordered sequence. DNA data storage poses a significant challenge to this model on both economic and policy fronts but this emerging industry can take simple steps to minimize costs while eliminating the risk of misuse.
