The correct use of a tyre warmer can see both the tread and carcass temperatures reach their optimal range (usually around 80 degrees Celsius) before hitting the tarmac which gives 2 advantages, one being increased life expectancy and the other greater performance both sooner and for longer.

Tyre blankets and tyre ovens are the two main options when it comes to tyre warming, and they both come with their strengths and weaknesses as Andre explains.

Starting with tyre blankets, these give users a greater range of control over the tyre temperatures with little chance of overheating the rubber which can lead to damage causing premature wear or failure. Where tyre blankets lack is the fact they do not warm the wheel/rim which can lead to the tyres cooling quicker if the driver cannot get some heat into the brakes and wheel quick enough once on track.

The alternative discussed is a tyre oven which warms both tyre and wheel/rim, but not without its own complications. A tyre oven can take a few forms, but these days is most commonly a diesel heater and a tent in which a set of tyres are stacked one on the other. The comparative disadvantages to a blanket are the requirement for supervision to rotate the tyres (the top one heats faster) which can be difficult at a busy race event, less precise temperature control and as such more risk of overheating 1 or more of the set.

Like everything in motorsports though, once you are armed with the knowledge of the pros and cons of whatever method you choose to use it becomes easier to avoid the pitfalls, and in the case of tyre warming the advantages certainly outweigh the risks in our opinion.
