In this lesson, we focus on the irregular Korean verbs and adjectives ending in 하다. You might already know that in the present tense, 하다 becomes 해요. This isn't an exception but a rule for verbs and adjectives ending in 하다. Let’s dive into this rule and how it affects conjugation in Korean.
Here is the rule: When 하 is the last syllable of the verb or adjective stem and meets 아 or 어, it changes to 여, resulting in 하여. In written Korean, 하여 is still sometimes used, such as in the -니다 form or in the past tense, but in spoken Korean, 하여 becomes 해.
For example:
하다 + 아요/어요 becomes 하여요, and in spoken Korean, 해요.
좋아하다 + 았어요/었어요 becomes 좋아하였어요, and in spoken Korean, 좋아했어요.
When 하다 meets a consonant, it conjugates normally:
피곤하다 + 고 becomes 피곤하고.
따뜻하다 + 지만 becomes 따뜻하지만.
Examples:
When conjugating 하다:
If the last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, add 아요 (e.g., 가요, 봐요).
If it's any other vowel, add 어요 (e.g., 먹어요).
하다 becomes 하여요 in written Korean, and 해요 in spoken Korean.
