Please excuse the poor lighting and mess I'm in the middle of redecorating my kitchen and energy saving light bulbs are crap at the whole lighting a room.
Preparing big baits:-
1. Are your baits to be used whole or are they to be cut in half?
2. Cut tail off the bait, you don’t need it the Pike don’t care the bait has no tail, I do this because it stops the bait spinning on the cast or in moving water.
3. Is the bait to be dyed a different colour?
4. Is the bait to be injected with oils or flavourings?
5. If baits to be used whole then it will help now while it's fresh to cut through the skull, doing this when the bait is frozen is a bugger to do so do it now so when the bait thaws the head juice will be ready to leak out into the swim attracting hungry Pike.
6. Is the bait to be popped up? If so now is the time to insert your chosen pop up material you can use foam, balsa wood sticks or you can use boilie pop up sticks if you are using foam or balsa wood then you need to attach this to the trace so you’re going to get them back you don’t want the Pike to eat balsa wood or foam pop up balls it won’t do them any good.
7. Vac-Pack the bait for freshness this seals in all the juices flavours oils etc etc and stops freezer burn. You can pick up a cheap Vac-Packer from amazon for about £20 so they are worth while.
8. Freeze the baits flat this might sound obvious but try not to freeze your baits so they are kinked and bent this makes packing them into a bait bag for a session a pain in the hole.
9. Clean up your work space, again this might sound obvious you need to clean and wash down all knives chopping boards etc etc if only to stop your misses murdering you in your sleep because you left a mess and she's tired of your shit. Happy wife happy life so to speak.
10. Have yourself a beer, you have worked hard you have sorted your baits you have cleaned up your work space and the world should be good so sit back and crack open a cold one.
The trace wire I use is American Fishing wire (AFW) there's two types of this that I use the Bleeding Leader (the red plastic coated wire) and Surfstrand it's just your basic un coated wire, the trace wire I use tend to be about 45lb to 60lb breaking strength I'm not fishing for small Pike I want the big old grandma Pike so you need to use gear that’s fit for these fish.
The hooks I use are Owner hooks either ST41 or ST36 the ST41 are heavy beasts of trebles for those times when you need a extra strong hook to bring angry Pike to the bank.
The Swivels I use are Ball Bearing Swivels I have a couple of varieties of them from Savage Gear, Solar, AFW & ones I get from Eddie Turner it's important to use top quality gear that you trust, I robustly test the things I use to make sure they are up to the job I don’t compromise and neither should you.
For AFW wire, cracking Oils & other Pike fishing bits and pieces give Eddie Turner a look on :-

No I'm not sponsored by Eddie I have to pay for everything I get from him.
The Vac Pack Machine I use was something I picked up out of Aldi a few years back it's great for your deadbaits.
I also use it for caster and maggots if I'm going away for a long session I will put a pint of maggots in a bag then draw out the air this knocks the maggots out and puts them into a sort of coma it means that they can be kept in a cool bag for longer and they won’t start to turn to caster mid way through your session. When you need them open the bag and put them on a maggot riddle over a groundbait bucket the maggots will come back to life after a short period and crawl through the riddle leaving the debris and dead maggots behind, this is also great if your wanting to feed dead maggots in your feed you simply bag the maggots up then pop them in the freezer and there you go you have your dead maggots for your coarse fishing.
Thanks for watching.
