QUALITY FUNCTION DEPLOYMENT
Quality function deployment is a planning tool to fulfill customer expectations through; product design, engineering changes, and production process. Using quality function deployment an organization plans new product development and builds a House of Quality.
The team of QFD collects the information in the house of quality such as
►Voice of the customer (VOC) or the customer requirements,
►Voice of the organization or the technical descriptors,

OBJECTIVE OF QFD
►Studies the relationship between customer requirements and the technical descriptors, ►Analyzes the relationship between technical descriptors using a correlation matrix,
►calculates the prioritized customer requirements, and
►Calculates the prioritized technical descriptors.

FIRST INITIATED
Quality function deployment (QFD) was first initiated by Dr. Mizuno, a retired professor from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. The first application of QFD was in Mitsubishi, Heavy industries ltd. in the Kobe Shipyard, Japan.
QFD supports an organization to improve engineering knowledge, productivity, and quality and reduces production costs, product development time, and engineering changes.

ASPECTS OF QFD
Quality function deployment has two aspects; Quality deployment and Function deployment.
►Quality deployment: Translating customer requirements into product design requirements, a creative approach.
►Function deployment: Translating the product design requirements into the product, part, and process requirements.

IMPLEMENTATION OF QFD
♦Quality function deployment was first implemented in Toyota manufacturing in the production of Mini-Vans in 1977.
♦In 1984 QFD was introduced to the US in Xerox Inc. by Dr. Clausing.

BENEFITS OF QFD
♦Quality function deployment protects the voice of the customer, identifies the conflicting requirements of the customer and resolved them before production, and controls the voice of the organization to enter into the product design adversely.
♦QFD directs the QFD team to design the product as expected by the customer and avoids the improvements that the customer doesn't want in the product and so guarantees the implementation of the voice of the customer into the final product or service.
♦QFD saves a lot of time to design a new product and also to redesign or modify a product, takes about one-third to one-half of the time taken by traditional means, reduces the product development costs, and helps an organization to push the product to enter into the market earlier than expected.

QFD TEAMS
Quality function deployment teams are of two types;
►New product design team.
►Existing product modification team.
