Our New YHS House Names

Описание: The start of the school year is always an energizing time full of promise and renewal. In June, we shared that York House School has selected new names for the YHS House system. Today, we are pleased to share with you a video and the logos that capture the spirit of these House names and their significance for us as a community.

Through an inclusive and consultative process, students, staff, faculty, and alumnae chose the names Pine, Arbutus, Cypress, and Maple. These are tree-named streets that connect our Little, Junior, and Senior School campuses. As a school, we are inspired to have names that root us in this place and location.

We acknowledge the xwməѲkwəyəm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səlílwəta/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations that have existed here since time immemorial and upon whose ancestral and unceded lands we live and learn. The names of trees represent strength, adaptability, and growth that we associate with learning at York House School.

We hope that these new names will foster feelings of connection, groundedness, and meaning for our York House School community for years to come. As we have communicated, our House colours will serve as a bridge, connecting generations past, present, and future: Maple House is red. Arbutus House is blue. Pine House is green. Cypress House is gold.

We wish to thank the many members of our community whose creative ideas and suggestions contributed immensely to a rich and consultative naming process.
