In this first episode of “Coffee with the Curator”—a semi-monthly series featuring distinctive objects from Carnegie Mellon University’s collection of rare books and historical technologies—Curator of Special Collections Sam Lemley recounts the material and cultural history of the Posner Bill of Rights, one of five known copies of the first ‘official’ edition of the American Bill of Rights printed in 1792.
CMU’s copy was deposited with Special Collections by Helen and Henry Posner Jr. along with the rest of the Posner Memorial Collection in memory of Henry Posner Sr. in 1978. The launch of this video series coincides with the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, explaining the choice of topic for this inaugural episode.
