Tim Bernard (b. 1994) is from the French Alps (Hautes-Alpes). He studied knifemaking in Thiers, where he worked for several French factories. Renowned knifemaker Manu Laplace would become his mentor and trained him for two years, before Bernard started his own business in 2016. Bernard received the CAP Coutellerie de Thiers. He began forging in 2021. His favorite part of the job is finding rare and unusual materials, combining them to tell a story with his knives. It is rare to see his work in the United States and we are excited to be able to offer it at BladeGallery.
The Gyr model was developed in 2019. This short and stocky front flipper bears the name of a torrent in the Hautes-Alpes that is one of Bernard’s favorite fishing and kayaking spots.
The drop point is hand ground RWL-34 stainless steel with a stonewash finish. RWL-34 is a premium powder metallurgy cutlery steel manufactured by Damasteel in Sweden. Because it is manufactured from rapidly solidified powders, the microstructure of the steel is much more uniform. This gives the steel much higher strength and durability while maintaining very high wear resistance. Tim's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
Handle scales are cream toned burlap Micarta set on rock textured titanium liners. The liners surround a satin finished stainless steel backspacer. The rock textured titanium pocket clip is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather pocket slip and a coffee travel cup with the Atelier Névé logo.
Excellent work throughout!
