Improved Ericsson Hot Air Engine, 5 inch piston, serial number is 14569. Built around 1905 and it is an example of an external combustion engine. The hot air piston powers a small water pump attached to the cylinder. These low pressure pumps were used to move water from shallow wells, streams, ponds, etc. The 5" cylinder contains both the power piston and an air displacer. The cylinder has a hot end on the bottom, within the firebox, and a cold end at the top, surrounded by a water jacket. As the air is heated within the lower cylinder the air expands driving the piston upward. The displacer then moves downward pushing the air from the hot side into the cool side of the cylinder. The air then contracts, pulling the piston downward. The displacer then moves the air from the cool side to the hot side and the cycle begins again. As the unit pumps water it flows thru the top cylinder water jacket helping to keep the top side cooler.
