The man, who didn't speak to media, stopped a thief escaping with his car after giving chase in another vehicle and crashing into it after it was stolen from outside his home early in the morning in Melbourne, Australia.

When an Australian Channel 9 News reporter name him as Tony, they issued dead-pan responses.

"Who? Tony? Tony Mokbel? He's already locked up," said one man, referring to a Melbourne criminal in jail for drug trafficking.

When they then admit to knowing him, they spin increasingly elaborate identities.

"His name's Tony Montana," said one, the same name as a character in the film Scarface.

For a short time they are a little more serious, telling reporters: "I reckon it's very brave to chase someone when you don't even know who they are and they could have guns on them or something."

But that doesn't last long. When a reporter ask whether the man got his 'gear' back, referring to some equipment he owned, one man couldn't resist another wisecrack.

"His gear? Yeah he got his pot back, he got his bong, everything is back man," he said.

The video has gone viral after it was shared online by a top Queensland rapper.

The alleged offender who took the car is reported to be in hospital recovering from injuries sustained during the crash.
