How to remove rust with acids from your brakes. Three acids are used in the video, hydrochloric acid which is also called muriatic acid, phosphoric acid which is the same acid as you can find tiny amounts of in Coca-Cola, and finally I used a rust converter which contained Tannic acid. The first acid, the hydrochloric acid was used because it’s the fastest acid to dissolve rust, the second acid was used to remove the first acid and to bond dissolved iron ions into iron phosphate that could be rinsed off or left on the part. The final Tannic acid is a complex molecule that actually takes any free remaining iron ions and bonds them up in an organic coating layer, which works excellent as a primer coating for the powder coat. To prevent the rust from coming back, the brake drum was first coated with a zinc primer. The zinc primer has zinc in it as a sacrifice metal so all the zinc needs to be consumed before any iron is consumed in the future as rust wants to come back. The final black coat is just for the appearance. All the acids should be used with extreme care and the electricity needs to be worked with using equally much attention. To dispose the acids, one has to neutralize them as separately collected, which can be done for these small amounts by simple dilution with water.
