In 1935, Italian engineers at Ansaldo created one of the most bizarre combat vehicles in history: the MIAS (Motomitragliatrice Blindata d'Assalto). It was designed as a "motorized shield" for infantry support, but it had a fatal design flaw—it had no seat.
The soldier inside was forced to drive, aim, and fire machine guns while constantly crouching. Moving at only walking speed (3 mph) and leaving the operator's legs exposed, this "tank" was an engineering disaster.
