Ananthapadmanabhaswamy Temple or Ananthapura Lake Temple is a Hindu temple builtin the middle of a lake in the little village of Ananthapura, around 6 km from the town of Kumbla inManjeshwaram Taluk of Kasaragod District of Kerala, South India. This is the only lake temple inKerala and is believed to be the original seat (Moolasthanam) of AnanthapadmanabhaSwami(Padmanabhaswamy temple) Thiruvananthapuram.
Legend has it that this is the original site whereAnanthapadmanabha settled down.Babiya,avegitarian crocodile also very famous . She died atage of 75 on October 9,2022. She ate only temple offerings that were served to her twice a week andneverharmed a single human.
Visiting a 1000-year old temple dedicated to Lord Ananthapadmanabha surrounded by a lake can be a peaceful experience for each devotee. This 9th century temple is the original abode of the deity of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.


Ananthapura Lake Temple is the only lake temple in the state Kerala and the original idols in the sanctum sanctorum were made up of a unique mixture called 'Kadu-Sharkara-Yogam’. More than 70 materials with medicinal properties were used to prepare this mixture. But those idols were replaced in 1972 with panchaloha metals. The walls of the temple are decorated by beautiful paintings. There is a small cave within the temple that opens out to a tiny tank. The water level of this tank remains unchanged regardless of climatic variations.There are no restrictions to visit this temple and it is open to everybody irrespective of religion, caste or creed.

StructureThe temple is unique in its structural aspects for it is erected in the middle of an impressive lake of 302 feet. The lake is gifted witha perennial supply of pure spring water. We can find the ruins of temples all round the lake which stand testimony to the fact thatit was part of a great temple complex. The sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), namaskara-mandapam, thitappalli, and shrines ofJala-Durga and the entrance of the cave are located in the lake. The namaskaramandapam is connected to the eastern rock bya foot-bridge which is the only passage to the sreekovil.

The temple is open to all regardless of religion or caste. The nearest major railway station to Ananthapura Lake Temple is Kumbla railwaystation which is about 5 km from here. Mangalore Airport is the nearest airport which is about 54 km (via NH66) from here. KannurInternational Airport, is about 123 km. To reach there by road one has to take a deviation from Naikap (4 km from Kumbla) on theKumbala-Badiyadka road.
