Ten weeks of hustle and scurry, working from sunrise to sunset, gathering mouthfuls of grasses, wildflowers, leaves, and herbs, and hauling them back to his den to build what scientists call a “haypile.” But this isn’t just a pile — it’s his pantry, his blanket, and his lifeline for the brutal winter to come.

Because here's the heartbreaking truth: if he doesn’t gather enough, he doesn’t make it. The pika doesn’t hibernate. He doesn’t migrate. And he can’t survive in the snow without the food he’s stored. He’ll spend the entire freezing winter beneath the rocks, relying on every single bite of food he spent his summer collecting.

And as if that wasn’t enough — the heat can kill him too. If temperatures rise above 25°C (77°F), the pika can overheat and die in mere hours. That’s why he’s often called a climate sentinel — a tiny voice warning us of the changes happening in the mountains.

Yet he keeps working. Tirelessly. With determination. And always with those wide eyes and rounded ears that make your heart melt.
