If you're experiencing breadcrumbing signs where your ex only reaches out when they need something, it's because, most of the time, you're too available and you've accepted to be in a relationship where you've lost all control over the power struggle, and it's very one sided, it's all about them, and you have not been able to establish firm boundaries.

This is not a one-size-fits-all solution. If you're dealing with an ex only reaches out when they need something as one of the several breadcrumbing signs, Love Advice TV Coach Adrian suggests that you do not respond and ignore them, to prove to them you're not going to be available all the time. And you shouldn't do it just once. You should do this until they are begging you to interact with them.

You have to show this person that you can exist without them. You have to set the record straight. You're not going to be disrespectful or that you're bitter or resentful. You're just going to show that you are more distant, that you have other priorities. They cannot breakup with you and still have all the perks of being in a relationship with you. It doesn't work that way. They need to lose you in order to appreciate what they had.

If your ex only reaches out when they need something, ignore them. It's the best way to reassert control and to level out the balance of power.

Now, if you're dealing with an ex who is depressed, or that you neglected, or that you cheated on, and they are reaching out to you, go in the complete opposite direction. This is why we said this situation does not have a one-size-fits-all solution. Doing a no contact when you've hurt your ex, cheated on them, or neglected them is not a good idea. Be there for your ex, even if it hurts you, because we need to rebuild trust in these types of situations. Rebuilding that trust is more important than seizing control over the power struggle.
