(14 Sep 1994) Calm returned to Dhaka on Wednesday (14/9) after four days of
anti-government protests and strikes left hundreds of people
injured or arrested and the national economy crippled, but made
little impact on Bangladesh's political impasse. Schools, offices
and banks were closed and traffic brought to a standstill. The
opposition was trying to force the ruling
the ruling party (BNP) to initiate a bill to set up a
neutral caretaker administration and then step down and hold fresh
elections.
