Today we’re walking through Ilsan Market, a neighborhood market in Goyang just northwest of Seoul, with over 100 years of history. There's no tourist crowds or flashy signage here. Just real, everyday Korean life.
The market is technically open every day, but on days ending in 3 and 8 (like the 3rd, 8th, 13th, etc.) it completely transforms. Dozens of extra stalls spill out onto the surrounding streets, turning it into a full-scale five-day market, and that’s when you’ll get the most vibrant experience. More vendors, more produce, more energy. If one of those dates happens to fall on a weekend, even better. You’ll see local families out shopping for their weekly meals.
In July, stalls burst with the color and scent of peak-season summer fruits like plums, peaches, and melons. You’ll also find fun fried snacks sizzling in oil, freshly made rice cakes, dried seafood, and enough banchan, side dishes, to fill an entire dinner table.
